So i'm 45, been in this since '98. Gonna be a decent list, but still training and competing! However currently dealing with a lower back issue for the last three weeks, so been just teaching from the sidelines when i can.

Left shoulder tear, surgery and bicep anchored into humerus (O Goshi'd by an over enthusiastic blue belt at the time)
Right shoulder tear, surgery and bicep anchored into humerus (Americana in Montreal Tourney in '00 i didn't tap to)
Left knee reconstruction (car accident in '92), acting up last 6 years so been getting injections for pain
Lower back herniation (work incident '98), many injections for pain
Neck fracture due to competition, no surgery needed
Left elbow injury, injections
Right elbow injury, injections
Upper rib displacement, chiropractic to put back into place

Lovely topic. lol

Both knees reconstructed. 8 surgeries ranging from ACL replacements to meniscus removal.
Both shoulders separated at AC joint.
Torn left pec and shoulder dislocation in a match.
Torn right hip flexor. That sucked to the highest level. Couldn't sit, couldn't lie down. Could only stand.
Got body slammed by a 300lb white belt several years ago onto the back of my neck. Back is messed up now.

I think that's it.

Broken arm
Broken collarbone
Broken knee cap
Complete separation of my collarbone from the shoulder (BJJ injury)
Both knees pop and lock up in me if pressure is exerted in certain directions (BJJ injuries)
Arthritis in both hands makes gripping hard. Worse no gi than In the gi. (Combination of repetitive use and BJJ aggrivate this)
History of cancer, so missing some inside pieces.

I guess that's enough.

Acute Leukemia survivor.
Two artificial hips secondary to avascular necrosis caused by the Leukemia chemotherapy.
Avascular necrosis also present in both knees and both shoulders from the chemotherapy but I have not had them replaced yet.
Progressive peripheral neuropathy due to the chemotherapy.
Fine essential tremors secondary to long history of combat sports, also probably aggravated by the chemotherapy, but initially predated the chemotherapy.
Several teeth replaced from getting knocked out or chipped over the years, largely due to not wearing mouthguards during the Gracie Challenge years in the 1990's.

More or less chronologically:

- Dislocated toe hitting a elbow while throwing kicks in MMA sparring
- Dislocated pinky on a shin attempting o uchi gari in a tournament
- LCL torn because one guy of the couple sparring muay thai beside my partner and I, threw his partner and he fell on my knee, I did not even saw it coming
- Something with a rib. Hurt in sparring, competed anyway, popped in and out for a while, now it's a bit out of place, go figure.
- Two prosthetic disks in the neck to fix severe herniation due to sparring and competing over congenital problems (this is the bad one for me and it quite affects me)
- Both ankles popped and/or strained ligaments
- Several herniated disks here and there

We do martial arts to stay in shape, right?

I have only been at this for about 1.5yrs so luckily not much specifically from BJJ. I did have knee scoped last april, but that was an old football injury that was aggravated by BJJ but needed to be addressed. I have a torn labrum in my right shoulder, but again that is an old football injury that BJJ aggravates occasionally. The surgeon said don't worry about it unless I mess it up worse.

Things directly related to BJJ are normal bumps, bruises, and soreness. About 2 weeks after starting, 1of the blue belts did pop my throat doing a RNC. It hurt to swallow for a week or two, but wasn't terrible.

Awesome post... I think we all have our insane amount of bumps and bruises. Major ones for me though....

Left Medial Meniscus Tear - Stepping up on a double leg... stupid... got it removed
Left Pec Major Tear - Doing some body weight dips, all repaired
Right Both Meniscus Tear - Who the hell knows, woke up one day. Got ozone injected, seems to be fixed
Left Shoulder - Who knows whats going on here, but I seem to sleep on it wrong
Lower Back - Again who knows whats going on, but I pulled something about 8 years ago getting a kettle bell certification, seems to come back every once in a while

most aren't from BJJ, but happened cross training. I should probably stop lifting :P Or I should stop sleeping

lol ok well...

its abit weird with me i barely go to the doc
so cant say for sure but:

all fingers popped here and there and some popped hard and are now way thicker than they used to be and its permanent.
especially my ringfinger and a thumb, the thumb dislocated in a match, i put it back in place while still fighting. the ring finger kept jumping out and facing the worng direction no matter how often i would put it back. months of constant Tape fixed it...

both my knees popped on both sides several times
no idea how many bands are left or whats damaged
but i had sometimes years of instability but somehow its all cool now, seems even more flexible than before...

my ribcage is slightly weird shaped cause my ribs popped a few times and left me in pain for weeks everytime...

had lower back pains for over a year, thought i was gonna end up in a wheelchair back when i was purple. shits gone now im all cool and flexible inverting n shit...

2 times i know for sure bands torn in my feet but probably it was way more often the case. feet are fine now

random pains in tendons sometimes, cant stretch out one arm fully but my armbar escapes are fire so im usually safe.

banged one knee once so hard that i couldnt do shit for like a week, docs told me to rest... decided to instead drain blood with a syringe by myself from my knee... shit worked wonders was fine 2 days later.

every single joint in my body cracks around alot but i have no pains at least...

dont recommend my way of doing things to anyone but it worked well mostly for me. :)

I do a fair amount of work with the players who have physical disabilities,

and I have artificial hips myself from leukemia chemotherapy,

and had to learn how to walk again after those treatments left my legs temporarily paralyzed.

It is really helpful in particular, with hip replacement, knee replacement, and shoulder replacement athletes to be able to reach out to each other,

and help the newly diagnosed get a jump on the games and tricks to speed and/or ease re-entry into former activity, including Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Wrestling etc.

None of it being medical advice, of course.

Just peer support.

Has anyone had their back fused? My dr said besides PT it my only option. We are putting that off until absolutely necessary. I’m 45 and been rolling for 21 years, however I’m out of work til April 1st and I’m going crazy!

Anyone who has had fusion, what was the downtime? Any lack of mobility and pain?

I first started submission grappling in 1993, and formally started BJJ in 2002. I just recently turned 50 years old, and still teach and grapple 3-4 days a week, most weeks.
Here's my list:

'96 tore right rotator cuff doing striking drills, probably had something to do with the double wrist lock I was in earlier that day also
'97 Tendon reattached to big toe (tore it completely off when stubbed)
'98 right ulna collateral ligament replaced (Tommy John procedure), ruptured years earlier during high school arm wrestling, and then badly aggravated with grappling
'98 left knee ACL reconstruction (patella graft) after a stupid attempt to use strength and poor technique hip throwing a much bigger opponent in my first ever BJJ match
'02 scoped my left knee for ongoing issues and bone chips that were floating around in it
'03 scoped my left knee again after 3/4 tearing my rebuild ACL. serious cartilage damage and degradation, told to expect severe arthritis
'04 left ulna collateral ligament replaced (Tommy John again), again most likely injured arm wrestling but remember hearing several pops one day during grappling (with a much bigger/stronger AIki Jujutsu black belt who had pinned my arm to the floor with an ikkyo arm bar - I got out but finished off my already damaged ligament in the process)
'04 car accident tore muscles in my back, I had a bunch literally the size of a softball protruding for over six months.
'05 fell and damaged the AC joint in my left shoulder
'06 was diagnosed with 2 major tears and a cyst in my left labrum, put off surgery indefinitely when my wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer
'16 hernia repair
'16 fell on a hill and destroyed what was left of the labrum in my left shoulder. Major tear in the supraspinatus. Tore bicep tendon right out of the joint. Labrum anchored in multiple places now. Supraspinatus repaired and anchored. Bicep tendon anchored to humurus now. They shaved out my AC joint entirely as it was so arthritic
'18 diagnosed with severe arthritis and bone spurs in BOTH knees. Need full knee replacements in both now. The Doc says he can't figure out how I'm even able to walk at this point with the giant bone spurs I have. I told him "Jiu Jitsu is the only thing holding me together and keeping me mobile, at this point."

Summary: I've had 8 joint surgeries so far, and am often referred to by friends and family as the "bionic man." I now need both knees replaced and am still nursing a torn rotator cuff in my "good" shoulder

"Here's my list"
Impressive! :)

I've been quite lucky. 8+ years of training and the worse has been a cracked rib that put me out for 5 weeks. Zero surgeries in my life. Also had healthy knees for years (no sports background!) until in a competition match an opponent's DLR hook popped my other kneecap. Probably some meniscus tear, loosened ligaments, and it did dislocate 2 more times within a year, but decided against any kind of operation and now it's pretty good again (wearing knee sleeves in training). Then the other knee popped from a rolling partner's sudden leg twist from Ashi Salami, but that healed up in a month or so (kept training). Both my big toes have been broken so they don't bend downward anymore.

Of course my fingers are crooked & in pain when somebody grabs 'em, and my lower back tires & gets achy easily. Right shoulder is extremely tight at the moment... But I think overall I have less issues than most people my age who just sit in the office & a sofa all day.

Lower back herniations anterior and posterior finally had a rupture - got surgery (discectomy)
broken fingers only one was ever casted and it was my right pinky. has to be casted with my ring finger for some reason and it looks mutated
right shoulder tear no surgery and always always in pain - doctor thinks I am an idiot and he is probably right
right knee for years but don't want to get it checked because I know it needs surgery.
popped ribs
cervical spine herniations both anterior and posterior - thanks to a renzo gracie black belt who I won't name, but I committed the sin of taking his back as a blue belt rolling at a seminar - I was probably going too hard and he just wanted to play. Don't know but I paid a hefty price for that little maneuver. Hurts all the time
Left and Right ankle - Left ankle got rolled and snapped pretty hard when I was asked to move my car (while training) and rushed off the mat with my running shoes half on. I constantly roll my left ankle due to the nerver damage from my disc rupturing. So I step down weird because I have no feeling on some of my toes. My right ankle is from working onsite and stepping on uneven ground all the time.
Now my groin on the left side is messed up. Thought I had a hernia but it's just a sprain. Would rather have a broken finger or two than this mess. It is debilitating.

Glad I'm not the only one suffering from the "Gentle Art" Lol

How about skin infections? All of the ones I had were at previous academies or visiting an academy.
Thank goodness I haven't had anything in over 11 years. I use a Teatree oil and alcohol mix and spray it on after every training session before I go home and shower immediately. There are some nasty people in this world.
I have had all of these:

Ringworm - at least 2x
Tinea Versicolor - 1x
Wart - one time on my wrist
MRSA - 2x (2nd time almost killed me and compromised my immune system)
Athletes foot - 1x

"How about skin infections? "
Impetigo x 2 (both to a rash on my face)
Athlete's foot - probably about twice a year at least...

I always shower at the gym directly after training (I was shocked to find out how few gyms in USA & Brazil have showers!) & use flipflops, but I do go to public saunas & other gyms regularly (like weight training at the office gym), which might be the cause of the Athlete's foot rather than our home academy.
