List talented famous/infamous black black belts or other ranks that turned out to be criminals. (any category)
I'll start with Cameron Earle. Amazing jiu jitsu but he was a notorious sexual predator who used jiu jitsu to incapacitate his victims.
I believe he even defeated the great Marcelo Garcia 2x (I may be wrong on the number)

There were a suprising amount of sex offenders under the Rickson banner, as I recall. Romulo Barros being one of them.

Romulo? Whoa! That one I never heard of. The TLI has some notoriety in that regard.

Ok I misread the Romolo name (my glasses are upstairs) I thought it said Romulo Barral. Oops my bad...lol
I could never remain tied to let alone promote anyone who has been guilty of any of these offenses.

Was he ever convicted of anything? Not sure he goes under “nefarious criminal” more than maybe just “wildly unprofessional and inappropriate”, but could have been some developments in the story I didn’t hear of.

As i recall there was one person who can forward and tried to press charges. But it didn't go through for a bunch of reasons.

"Jackson Sousa"
Well shit. I have trained with Jack a bunch & always thought of him as a genuine, positive and friendly fellow. :(
(Of course men can be that to their male friends, and total scumbags to women.)

Sounds more like a Mike Fowler type of situation with the info so far, rather than criminal activity. Still sad news...

Dan Swift - animal cruelty, Sergio Robalo - GBH on a student, Daryell Dickson Menezes Xavier - Paedophile / Murder with a horrific conviction that you don't even want to read.
Peter Milner & Nicholas Tuley - Paedophiles but not entirely sure if they were teaching BJJ or Japanese Jiu-Jitsu.

I think the message is - read the person, not the belt.

I don't think the belts these criminals wear have any relevance anyway. Plenty of weird characters out there for sure. Many people can hide their true nature for awhile but eventually they slip up. I once heard of a black belt getting caught shooting dope and no one had a clue about it till he slipped up.
We get all kinds. Staying vigilant at all times is very important.

Here's one from my hometown, a couple of years ago. Not only was he a BJJ instructor, he was also a firefighter.

"Who was he under?"
Joao Vasconcellos, and Rickson Gracie. He was "only" a brown belt though, not black.

More MMA than Jiu Jitsu, but the definition of a hardened criminal. Went three rounds with Anderson Silva and convicted of a £53 million robbery

Joe Son - Convicted of vandalism, rape, torture and voluntary manslaughter. Sentenced to life imprisonment. Was in UFC 4 and faced Keith Hackney. Don't think he was a jiu jitsu black belt but rather Tae Kwon Do.

At any rate, he's the worst I can think of. Also "skilled" would be debatable.
