.

10 weeks exactly since surgery and my recovery has far exceeded anything my physiotherapist and I expected for this point.

My biceps tendon still causes me some pain and weakness making under hooks a challenge but it improves on a daily basis.

Weight training is going great and I am nearly doing unsupported chin ups and can row 26kg dumbbells. Pressing is still a bit funky with 16kg dumbbells but definitely a bit spicy on this movement.

Yesterday was the first time I let myself do any sparring. After 10 weeks of limiting myself to coaching duties I did a slow paced round with someone I trusted and it felt so good to get back a missing pice of what makes me who I am.

It left me sore but so does a heavy gym session. I will now aim to do a single round several days a week with people I trust to move slow while I explore limitations in my movement capacity.

Overall I am feeling super positive that a slow and consistent approach to my return to sport will have me back enjoying multiple rounds with no pain in a month or two from now.

Friends, I am almost 6 months post anatomical shoulder replacement surgery. I imagine I am still alitte behind on healing only because of my own actions lol. Cant keep us down. So I am almost back 100 ROM but still have some pain because I pushed it. I believe that mainly the tendon they cut to get the implant in place. I
Back to rolling but just not as much because now I am working up my left shoulder replacement in a couple years. We can’t win! But the pain I needed to be relieved is 100 gone and daily life is much better. I am also still strengthening too so S&C is coming well and starting to go over head again. I imagine it will take a full year for me but I am over all glad I did it. If you have a good doctor you absolutely 💯 will be able to train hard and compete again.

Good to hear you are doing good. I second that getting the surgery will not stop you training if you take recovery seriously. The trick is to push hard enough to get the job done without going so hard you cause a set back.

What sorts of things do you think were the mistakes that have slowed your recovery?

Well I think that I got back to teaching to quickly. I taught via proxy for a few weeks. Using my shoulder too much, reaching back, maybe pushing too hard. A number of things. Recovery has been good up and down of course. Listen to the doctors!

So tomorrow is 12 weeks. Last week I started doing full range neutral grip chin ups and swimming front crawl. Both things I have been unable to do for years due to the arthritis in my shoulder.

I also saw my physio who gave the green light for some sparring so long as I stick to slow
Paced rounds with people that I trust and I listen to my body.

Mainly this has gone well but one person who I should have listened to my gut on went explosive and that really pissed me off. So the lesson here is to trust your gut and unless absolutely sure about someone just say ‘No’.
