I've never understood why people fail to wash their belt. At least do it once a month people. It's like a sponge for all the sweat, blood, snot, piss, poop, and semen that covers the mats during class/open mat!
All that grossness and only recommending monthly? Every time you wear it! You are allowed to re-tape your own stripes if they fall off. Yes your belt will wear out faster but that is a good look anyway.

I'm not recommending monthly, I said at least... I do mine far more than that. :)
The Story of never washing your belt is a great story. And just that, a story!
It's super awesome to think that you wear a white belt, and wear it long enough that it turns black from all of the hard work you put into it.
fortunately our knowledge of cleanliness has improved since then
I gotta say....I've not even been a black belt for a month, and my belt is already showing fade from washing and training in it each day. Makes me look at my fellow black belts who're rocking super dark belts after years with MAXIMUM SUSPECT. haha.
I try and wash mine after every training, minimum of once a week if I'm super busy (because that's laundry day).
I've only had my brown since December, the color is fading. Someone asked what I was doing to it, I said I wash it. I was mocked, good luck with your ring worm bro ;)
Found this a month ago from the back of my closet. Washed it quite often as you see. My current belt has been in use for a bit longer, but looks brand new. Doing mainly nogi really shows. Or rather doesn't. :D
I have actually had people argue with me that you shouldn't it's amazing a few have actually tried to argue that it isn't unsafe for your training partners with psuedo science

poop and semen.....we must train differently. HAHA!
I tell people "If you are worried about washing away your knowledge, you either need to take notes or listen more." And you can replace the tape, no one will get mad >.<
I would either wash it after every practice or at least every other practice. Had a hemp belt for awhile but i totally agree. our prof joey never did stripes so didnt have to worry about them washing off

People always give me a hard time about washing it but I ALWAYS wash my belt.

Ironically, the reverse is true. Black to white from a lot of training ... AND WASHING!
