Following in the footsteps of the Military personnel group, let's hear from our Leos and those academy or individuals that support Law Enforcement personnel. About me: My name is Sebastien Lavoie and I am a former Canadian Forces infantryman (yes canada has an army;) and a 20 yr member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. I spent most of my career (13 yrs) in tactical operations as a full time member of the Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team (SWAT) and 4 years in a covert tactical unit formed after 9/11. During my 13 yrs on the team I spent 5 yrs as a Breacher/ Entry team member and 7 as a Team Leader. I was also the Combative lead for the team and spent a great deal of time training our folks. I am currently the divisional Sergeant Major in Vancouver, BC Canada (8000 members). I hope that this new thread takes off and that we create lasting BJJ relationships with the end goal of making us all better and safer. Who are you ? ![]() |

I served 4 years in a signal intelligence Unit of the German Army as a seargent OR-5 and after Service time in the Military I began to serve as a sworn correctional officer (almost 20 years now). After academy I did regular duty on various blocks for 8 years. For almost 12 years now I serve as Fitness/ sports instructor, Combatives /DT/arrest and control instructor and CERT team member of our facility: so I am just a average joe on the mat trying to stay self defense ready, shaking the stress off, stay healthy and fit and to have fun in a positive environment after duty! |

I am a 3rd lieutenant in reserve in Estonian defence forces. Have trained police officers a couple of times. The lack of interest in that was unfortunately sad :( It seems the hand-to-hand combat enthusiasts of Estonian LE are still in their very much "traditional" bubble all the while the non-enthusiasts (majority) just don't care. Jorgen, I think I speak on behalf of everyone when i say that getting cops to train BJJ or management to support it financially or otherwise is extemely challenging. However, BJJ has gained in popularity with LEOs in recent years and is becoming more and more main stream . Additionally, Estonia's Leos have a long history of using striking arts so you have you work cut out for you. All we can do is keep banging the drum until people are ready. As BJJ becomes more and more mainstream for Law Enforcement internationally, the will to learn will increase exponentially and quickly; when that happens, you will be there and ready to help. Thank you for that |
"Nice to meet you guys, like most of you had my time in the military and have been in Law Enforcement for almost 25 years. Currently a Lieutenant overseeing four patrol shifts." A BJJ practitioner patrol lieutenant, that sounds like a match made in heaven to encourage and support LEOs training. Be safe |
What a resume! Very impressive sir! Stupid nerd american question: did you like the show Flashpoint? I loved it, but I'm a nerd. I served a total of 18 years military. Military Police for 5 years active in the Army, 2 years reserve for the Air Force while completing an academy in 2005. Things didnt pan out well and I jumped back into active duty with the Army, switching gears to a more combat role as a Cavalry Scout (Reconnaissance). Leapt out in 2015 to the military police reserves in hopes of landing on a department somewhere around Dallas. No luck yet, just been working in the security industry so far until my luck gets better. Currently working as a Tactical Response Officer for a corporate campus, with specific duty of responding to armed threats against personnel and property. As you can imagine it's dull and very mundane. But I stay active in training as much as possible. Looking to get my packet in for my second attempt at Dallas PD hopefully this spring. Big supporter of the Blue Line. |

In this case however, being that I started this thread; it seemed like I sorta needed to. Don't get me wrong I'll post pictures and such but generally not "flaunting" the old CV for all to see. Especially considering that there are so many impressive resumes within this community (including yours). It took me 8 yrs to be successful keep driving forward and it will eventually pay off. |
"Unfortunately that's mostly really old pseudotraditional karate and traditional jujutsu." Yeah...it always depends on the state, department, which concept/system the officers have to use/train in defensive tactics training. Aliveness/ some sort of grappling and clinchwork As delivery system is a must in my perspective. If your partners are at least physical fit and train team tactics consistently alive, then arrest/control/ DT is a piece of cake. If you learn to arrest and control through grappling/ bjj/ grappling and clinched based concepts, like ISR Matrix, etc....even better! Nothing worse than just learn to throw punches in the air without any sort of resistance ... Greetings, Mirco |

Oh, I'm nothing special, but thanks. I got lucky and was able to get involved in some pretty decent training here and there but haven't been able to put it to work. I stumbled into SWAT training with the Air Force Reserve, had some fun with the SRT guys in my earlier MP days, dived into anything tactical and tacticool they'd let me participate in as a Recon grunt. The big win will be when I finally earn and pin that shield for a community willing to give me their trust. Been my experience that the need to "flaunt" has never been with the top tier professionals. We know what we did and didnt do, and like BJJ where the mats dont lie, when it hits the fan and gets real, it becomes very clear who's full of it and who isn't. Thank you for sharing! PS: ya didnt mention if you liked or ever seen Flashpoint. Lol |

"I'm pretend law enforcement. CBSA for 18 years..." Hii.. Im also an Customs Officer, an Indonesian Customs Officer (10 years in duty) . In Indonesia we're not part of military and defense ministry but we received basic combat training from Indonesian Special Forces (Kopasus). Since most of us are stationed on nation border and often encounter with armed bandit and narcotic smugglers:, we definatly need that self defense attribute. In my case, since i am stationed in head office, which not exposed to any dangerous situations like my brother on borders line, i guess i also pretend to be law enforcer. Haha.. |

already 10 years Chief Inspector in the Nerdsquad, officialy known as "computer crime unit". Since they know my martial background (also 2nd dan in Kyokushin and trained some mma fighters) I am allowed to go out 'when the going get's tough'. Spreading the BJJ-gospel when possible, this is a seminar, organised by LE-Athlete and where I was allowed to teach :) ![]() |

Both of them BJJ and Muay Thai practitioners. We became good friend. Be safe |
