In that regard, we all have jobs, family responsibilities and still train/teach/learn and made it to brown belt (and someday maybe blackbelt)ā¦.. Disrespectful of that Monkeyberg guy to say other people, who donāt make it to blackbelt in 3,5 years like he did, are dumb, stupid , lazy and donāt put the effort into itā¦.. It's exceptionnal to archive a Black belt in a so short among of time and it is unrealistic to think that it czn be a reality because the huge majority of the coaches around the world would not award a Black belt that short. There are many coaches who think that for exemple being a purple belt in less than 3 years of training isn't possible, no matter how much you train. I was born in a house build over our own dojo, so since a kid i do train every day in a lot of martial arts, when i dtart bjj it was the same, every day training, compete and traveling to learn, even that way, it took me 12 years to get my Black belt. We are now 15 years later, i'm still training at least 4 days per week, but i still feel my jiujitsu being better with time and practice. That's why i see jiujitsu as a martial arts and not a sport, because it's for your entier life, if you train smart you can keep training for decade... so why did some people have to rush that way...that moneyguy just want some attention. I think we already talk too much about him, if he sleeping better with that belt around him That's good for him but hr is a random in the bjj community. |
Jake Shileds and Mikey M claiming this guy is a black belt reminded me of the video of Kash Patel and Dan Bongino saying to trust them, Epstein killed himself. Iām not convinced Moneybags is a black belt level and donāt believe you can do it without sparring. Also, while I believe his coaches should be the focus of the āfakeā black belt, Moneybags comes off as arrogant. When I got my black belt I didnāt feel like I deserved it for a long time and lots of other black belts I know have felt the same way but not Moneybags š¤” The most amusing part is watching people dancing around Jake Shields and Mikey M but š©š©š©š© all over Moneyš°š°š°. |

Have you guys seen Chewies opinion on this matter (https://www.youtube.com/w[...]cUnuYrQjQQ)? For me the main point is that I think he is robbing himself of a big part of the journey (saying this as humble blue belt compared to you guys) that makes BJJ so amazing. And if he is not a legitimate black belt and continues his BJJ journey he will have a rough time coming... |

As a long-time martial artist (in 3 arts) my feeling is that Scrooge McMoneyberg's black belt doesn't take away from anyone else's blackbelt. They know what they did to earn that belt, and frankly, so does this guy. When I get my black belt one day I know this assclown's "belt" doesn't affect mine. |

I agree it does not affect our belts individually however I think we all agree we dont want to have the phrase "everyone has a karate blackbelt these days". Direct at BJJ as well. |
No national + international governing body (that is actually properly recognised and not run as a for-profit organisation) has put out clearly defined criteria for each belt promotion - this means we're all bickering over different standards and semantics. This means that you'll never please everyone. My criteria are simple: 1. Do you actually know what the fuck you are doing? Can you explain what you're doing? More specifically, as you approach brown and black belt, can you explain techniques and concepts to someone like they're a fucking idiot and have them understand it without giving them an aneurysm? 2. Can you actually implement shit in live rolling? Accommodations can be made for sizeable weight/age differences, gender, injuries, considerable athletic advantages/disadvantages, and pronounced belt differences. For example, I don't expect a 40-year old white belt mother of 2 with a full-time job to shithouse the larger, more athletic 20-year old blue belt who goes to uni and spends the rest of their time doing BJJ - but I expect them to show some competency and not get absolutely shithoused (only mildly shithoused). I observe a person over months and years, before then running it by the other coaches - at which point we vote on it. 3. Are you a cunt? If you don't respect the club's values, no belt for you. Derek Moneyberg, from what I have seen so far, has not ticked any of those boxes and if it came down to a beltchecker vote he'd be getting a negative ranking from me. Those are my criteria - you are all welcome to agree, or disagree, of course. That's my criteria. |

As late as 2000, BJ Penns 3y4m to BB was considered controversial (even though it came from Carlson BB Dede) until he proved himself by becoming the first gringo to win the mundials shortly after and the next year debuting in UFC. I suspect Moneyberg doesn't have any similar plans. And rewind less than 10 more years, to the pre-UFC era, and I believe black belts were basically only awarded by a not very large number of academy or team patriarchs, which more than enough would surpass the later IBJJF standardizations. Perhaps the rare non-Gracie lineages aside, does anyone here actually have someone in their lineage who was promoted to BB pre-UFC and who wasn't in turn promoted by someone very well known? Someone who had been training for at least 4Ā½y before getting BB and 10Ā½ years before promoting BB:s of their own? |
