Visiting a school while travelling and having the teacher say to one of his guys "hey roll with the old guy over there who came in for an introductory class" and watching his face when nothing works and it dawns on him his teacher was messing with him

ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED!

Today I choked unconscious a person that was in for their first class.

Not proud of that at all :(

RNC is the first thing we teach after warmup and talking about jiu jitsu a bit. WE COVER TAPPING right before that. We had 2 knew guys, it was the daytime class. Demonstrated gently on one person, he tapped, the other asked some questions as well and I said I'll demonstrate on you. Put the choke gently on, nothing happens he doesn't react. I'm thinking he's trying to tough it out a bit, I tighten up a little bit and he goes out and starts convulsing. Choke was on just a few seconds, definitely less than 10.

He started to immediately come back (I put him down on his side, lift the legs and then he was fine). Told that he forgot he was supposed to tap and then already went out.

Luckily both of the new guys were actually cool with that and understood.

Next time even if I do have the suspicion that the new guy might want to test and tough it a bit - first I'll let go and ask if this is really what he wants and explain the risks. No way I'm risking something like that happening ever again...

We definitely need a forum profile microbadge for members who have done this.

Yikes, I almost did this to a blackbelt who was giving me a private lesson. He was working with me on the Bow and Arrow choke. I felt him lightly touching my leg and I thought he was pointing to something I needed to change. I then realized he was going out and let him go. Calmest tap I have ever seen.
I guess I used micro adjustments or something. LOL

When I was a purple belt I was invited to coach at a border police outpost in Borneo. There were around 10 participants/officers who lined up wanting to experience being choked out and I obliged :(

"Body odour, farts and hair in mouth between friends & enemies is all fine & dandy! :) And luckily also the worst I've personally encountered. Or perhaps it was the one guy literally puking on a competition mat mid-match after a too-heavy hotel bacon breakfast. Was at a small comp so the match was simply paused, the mat cleaned up & he was allowed to continue... and won! (Thankfully I was just an observer.) But some of the stuff on here are on another level of gross, good grief! :D"
Perhaps the same Finnish referee who I saw in a match where they went further and further outside the fight area, but it was a tight triangle choke so he really held off with moving them to the middle until they were ridiculously outside and he really had to. The triangle is loosened and the choked dude moves as if to help move towards the middle, but it's like that consumes the last of his oxygen and he collapses unconscious and is revived. But it was after the referee stopped the fight, so they are moved to the middle of the mat and restarted in the same triangle position. And the dude is no more keen on tapping this time, so he is choked unconscious again, probably less than a minute after last time. Only time I've seen someone get choked out twice in the same match.

Same tournament where I (blue belt back then) got a legal tap within the time limits but still lost the fight. I got caught in a back guard, but the other guy crossed his feet so I tapped him out with the foot lock and when I let go, I saw some glove(?) being thrown in on the mat to signal the end of the match. But the referee didn't seem to have recognized the foot lock (or if he got us mixed up), so the other guys arm was raised.

A very weird but entertaining competition and it was outside on a beach. Sunscreen isn't really the first thing that comes to mind to pack for a week of indoor (I thought) training in Finland, but I got a really bad face burn with skin peeling off (zombie style) in the subsequent classes back at the Finnish academy I was visiting (I think my blue belt pic with the blue gi:s is from just after the competition, which would explain my red face). I still got visible marks on my nose from that.

But just as fun as my other training trips to the country of our dear and crazy eastern neighbors! :-)

When I was just about to get my black belt, I had just learned a cool new choke at a judo camp, and my sensei didn't know the technique. He was quite a bit bigger than me and often rolled with me for long intense sessions, but I found myself in a good position to try the new choke. He said "Mark, you'd better let go now" so of course I let go. He seemed to stagger for a bit and then collapsed. I helped him come to, and he asked me why I let go. I berated him for not tapping (he never does), and told him "because you told me to". He was completely unconscious when he said it, so he had no memory of it. I learned a lot about choke outs that day.

I had a similar situation with one of our instructors. I'm known in our academy for coming up with random things on the spot that shouldn't work, but do. I caught him in one of those moments and sunk in a choke. After several seconds he verbally tapped and I stopped. Several seconds later he woke up and asked what happened.
